Starting a van life on your own can be challenging but you’ll start realizing why all of the work is worth it in the end.

If you are starting the van lifestyle on your own as a female solo traveler, make sure to follow some of these tips to prioritize your own safety.

1. Always Read Reviews
Before booking a camping site to park your van, make sure to see what others are saying about the location. This would help you get an idea on what to expect and will help you decide on whether it is safe to stay there for the night.

2. Leave a Second Chair and Extra Shoes
When setting up your camping site, leave at least two chairs outside and some extra shoes to make it seem that you have company. This may seem ridiculous but it is a simple step that can lure away any strangers.

3. Install Curtains
Have curtains inside your camper van so that no one will be poking around your camper van and invading your privacy when it is unwanted. Close the curtains when you are leaving your van behind or when you are sleeping inside.

4. Portable Safety Alarm & Pepper Spray
Have a portable safety alarm and pepper spray on your keychain so that you can bring it wherever you go. If you need to call for help or defend yourself, these two tools will be your best friend.

5. Don’t Share your Location on Social Media but Tell One Trusted Person
Try not to overshare on social media especially when it comes to your location. Share it to someone you trust incase they don’t hear from you for a while.
